An MHMb coordinator’s tale
I’m Paul Massey, the Regional Coordinator for Mental Health Motorbike (MHMb) in South Yorkshire, and I wanted to give you all a quick update on what I’ve been up to in my role.
I’ve been involved with MHMb for a while now and qualified as a Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider®) through the organisation. This training has been invaluable in both my professional and personal life, especially in supporting others through my voluntary work with MHMb. As part of my ongoing development, I’m excited to share that I will soon be receiving TRiM Practitioner training, which is focused on trauma support, through my workplace at the Ministry of Justice (MOJ), where I also act as a Mental Health Champion and Men’s Mental Health Group Facilitator. Additionally, the MOJ is funding my RSPH Level 3 Award in Mental Health First Aid with MHFA England, which will further equip me to provide support in both my professional capacity and my volunteering with MHMb.
Unfortunately, due to some ill health, I haven’t been able to get things going quite as I’d hoped, but I’m still making steady progress. I’ve already attended a few local events and started making some great connections for next year. As many of you will know, the recent closure of SMC Bikes in Sheffield, after over 20 years in business, and the departure of Via Moto have left a real gap in the local biking community. These dealerships weren’t just places to buy motorcycles; they were thriving community hubs and popular meeting spots for bikers across the region. I’m hoping to help fill that gap by building a strong MHMb community in South Yorkshire.
One of the key steps I’ve taken so far is setting up a MHMb South Yorkshire WhatsApp Group. This has been a great way to bring people together, and I plan to continue growing the group’s numbers. In the coming months, I’ll be arranging regular meets, getting involved in local events, and fostering a supportive, welcoming environment for all riders across the region. I’m looking forward to developing this role further and helping to build a strong MHMb community in South Yorkshire. Please feel free to reach out if you’d like to get involved or have any ideas for events or activities in the area.
Take care and ride safe.
